buddy if i’m about to go into the tragedy that is bellamy blake and how nobody ever picks him first, we will be here all night
@spacexualkids pls talk about the tragedy that is Bellamy Blake all night that topic is my purpose in life i will support u 100%
I would love to hear your take. I feel this anon. I wrote a post about this myself. Bellamy’s actions this season aren’t excusable, but his anger at Clarke, in my opinion, is well founded and deserved.
ok yall have unleashed the kracken here we go.
first of all, there’s the fact that from the time he was 6yo Bellamy’s life was not his own. he existed to protect Octavia, to help his mom protect Octavia, and from the flashbacks it looks like while they were on the Ark, he never begrudged his sister that. he loved her unconditionally, he took the (unfair bc who puts this on a CHILD honestly) words his mother told him when he was 6 and he held them as gospel for his entire life. even at 23 he’s still repeating that mantra, it’s what he lives his life by, it’s what he holds up as the most important thing. this idea that Octavia is his responsibility (which obviously is unfair for her bc damn let her make her own choices but look at how he was raised i mean cmon) which in turn means that everything he does must be done with her in mind. if u look at it that way, bellamy has never truly been selfish (misguided and an asshole? hell yes). he has always done what he’s done with his sister as top priority.
now, before this season i would have said Octavia puts Bellamy first no doubt, but thanks to the trailer that no longer rings true. which is heart breaking for several reasons and i will never be okay with it. but either way, we have Bellamy putting someone first who doesn’t put him first. number one.
number two we have Raven. now to be fair to Raven, we haven’t seen her and Bellamy interact much this season (side eyes jroth like crazy) so idk if their friendship has changed or not, but looking at them in seasons one and two, it’s clear that Bellamy puts her before himself, and Raven doesn’t. i don’t think she even notices tbh, which can be said for most of these characters. but even from their sex scene in season one, it’s pretty clear that Raven is just using him to get back at Finn, and Bellamy goes along with it. i know a bunch of yall are gonna be like “but it’s sex, it’s not like it’s a hardship for him!” (which is kind of a fucked up way to look at men+sex but ok) but consider the way they both look afterwards. Raven looks angry; it didn’t work, she still feels shitty, possibly even shittier now for fucking this guy she doesn’t even like that much just because she found out her boyfriend cheated on her. but then you have Bellamy, who looks nervous, checking her over for her reaction. he doesn’t look sated or happy or calm or invigorated, the normal reactions to good sex or w/e. he clearly regrets it immediately, because it didn’t make her feel better.
number three we have Jasper. i think season one and two Jasper probably would have done anything for Bellamy, just like Bellamy would have done anything for him. but season three Jasper is a different story, and even through this Bellamy is willing to start a war just to protect him.
number four we have basically all of mt. weather. these people, to whom he owes nothing, these people who have tortured him, his friends, who have declared war on his people–he’s still so ready to save them. if you watch the scene where he and Clarke pull the lever, he only agrees and says “together” after glancing up at the screens and seeing his sister being held at gunpoint and forced down on the ground. because Octavia is still his top priority.
number five could be literally anybody. Bellamy Blake has the least amount of self worth i have ever seen a character have. he would die to protect/save anyone because he’d think they have more of a right to live than he does.
when he went along with Pike to massacre those grounders, he didn’t do it for himself. he didn’t do it to make himself feel better–in fact he knew it wouldn’t. he knew it would be torture, knew it would make him hate himself even more. he told Finn there are some lines you can’t uncross. he crossed that line in season one, when he accidentally set off the culling. those lives and that guilt have been with him each day since–they’re why he was so desperate to save the people in mt. weather, why he’s so desperate to be on the front lines. because he thinks he deserves to die, but if he goes, he’ll go out protecting people–whether it’s from falling off a cliff, or from an army that might decide to change their mind and attack Arkadia after all. Bellamy does these things, volunteers for the missions, is the first one out the door, not because he inherently wants to be the leader, but because he doesn’t want anyone else to have to cross that line, not when he can get his own hands dirty. he thinks he’s already unforgivable, already a monster, and he wants to keep other people from becoming one too. that’s why he does the worst of it. not because he wants to, but because he doesn’t want his friends to have to.
and now we have Clarke. i don’t really think i have to list all of the examples; we’ve all pretty much known since the moment he killed Dax. Bellamy will always put Clarke ahead of himself, ahead of all others except for Octavia, because Clarke was the first one to see through and realize he was still just that 6 year old kid taking on responsibilities that were way too big for him. taking on everyone else’s lives as his own, because that’s the only way he knows how to keep going.
he’ll put Clarke first because he thinks she’s more important than he is, because she can offer their people all the things that he can’t, because in his mind, he’s a monster for the choices he’s made, but she’s a martyr. and yeah, he’s pissed about her mistakes, as he should be, but Clarke will never be unforgivable to him, and he will never be able to give her up. it’s not just because he loves her–although there’s that too–it’s the fact that she represents something to him. forgiveness, acceptance, absolution, maybe all of the above. she represents the version of himself that he desperately wants to be. a version that is good and just and all the positive traits that he’s convinced have been overshadowed by his faults and mistakes and bad choices.
and i don’t know if Clarke will ever put him first, tbh. i don’t know if she can. yes we all saw her in the cave, willing to do anything so Roan would spare him, but that Clarke Griffin was still in the middle of an isolated depression, having been alone and barely living for the past three months, just swimming in constant guilt and self-hate. Bellamy represents to her, exactly what she is to him. a reflection of better times, better choices. yes he was there in mt. weather when she killed all those people, but he was the one good part of that moment, the person who wouldn’t let her bear it alone. when she saw Lexa, she saw what she had done. when she sees Bellamy, she sees why she did it.
but i’m not sure if the Clarke Griffin that exists now will ever be able to put any single person first. i don’t know if she’s capable. Clarke has always been a big-picture person, and after so much time engaged in manipulation games and politics, i don’t know if she’ll ever be able to have a simple enough outlook that she can pick Bellamy ahead of all the rest, no matter how many times he chooses her.
I think this is a great interpretation and evidence that Bellamy is not acting out of character but is rather acting on the saddest, most tragic aspects of his character.
I know everybody is hating on this season, but I think it’s deliberate, not ooc, not an accident and not poor writing. I think it is HELL. I think they are deliberately taking all the pov characters through their worst hell. And I think in retrospect, we’ll be able to see all these connections and clues and understand what it all meant in a way it’s hard to see now, because we are in it with the characters.
I hope anyway. I think they are setting it up that way, but it might be tough to pull off and we’ll have to see if they succeed. It’s a huge risk.
my issue with this season is in the pacing. there is so much development, so much happening off screen that we don’t get to see bridge the episodes together, or lead to these actions. i absolutely believe bellamy would follow pike, if given the right motivation. but we didn’t see that. we just have to assume that he knows pike well, or he’s suffering from ptsd etc etc etc. it’s sloppy writing, to expect ur audience to put the pieces together themselves when u only give them half the puzzle.
Your analyzes/interpretation is really thoughtful.
You are right, they see the best versions of themselves in eachother.
And as I much as I love that they able to do so, it kind of bothers me.
It bothers me that they need an other person to see the best of themselves.
I like to think they don’t need an other person to see the best.
Thats why I was glad Clarke could not change Bellamy’s mind in their fight.
Thats why I was glad Clarke did not go back with Bellamy ( ok, no that was a lie, but still).
I am hoping the writers dont make their healing dependently on eachother.
Clarke and Bellamy have to learn to accept the guilt by themselves, not because they offers eachother absolution.
Besides I think that will push them in the right direction and I am all in with them supporting eachother in this process.
But I want to see them both to be able to see the best versions of them by themselves.
And I want this before Bellarke happen.
They have to accept and learn to love themselves before they love eachother in a purely romantic way.As far as the writing is concerned I agree.
I don’t think they have to hand every detail on a silver platter, but I do think the writers are giving themselves a hard time when they covering the explanation for every game-changing decision a character made in subcontext.
And we saw how this played out.
Bellamy was teared apart from certain people.i have nothing to add this is perf 💖
